Land Rover to launch all electric Range Rover in 2024

Land Rover announced Tuesday that an all-electric Range Rover will be added to its lineup in 2024.

The news came as the company unveiled the 2022 Range Rover, a redesigned fifth-generation luxury SUV that is loaded with technology has an electrical architecture that supports over-the-air software updates, and sits on a new flexible architecture that will be the foundation of the brand’s future models, including plug-in hybrid and electric variants.

Land Rover hasn’t revealed many specifics about the impending electric vehicle. Jaguar Land Rover, although being a faithful follower of its parent firm, may have foreseen this. JLR said in 2017 that starting in 2020, all new Jaguar and Land Rover cars will have an electric or hybrid option.

According to Land Rover, a mild-hybrid version of the new Range Rover will be available in 2022, and a plug-in hybrid version will be available in 2023.

The 2023 extended-range plug-in hybrid will be equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid inline six-cylinder engine, a 105kW electric motor, and a 38.2kWh lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 31.8kWh. This combination will offer a pure EV range of up to 62 miles and 434 horsepower.

The 2022 Range Rover will be available in a variety of configurations, including regular and long-wheelbase body styles, six- and eight-cylinder powertrains, and seating arrangements.

The Range Rover P400 SE, a mild hybrid with a 3.0L turbocharged engine producing 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, starts at $104,000, not including taxes or the $1,350 destination cost. The P530 First Edition, a long-wheelbase body style with a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 that delivers 523hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, starts at $163,500 in the 2022 Range Rover lineup (again not including taxes and fees).

According to Land Rover, the 2022 Range Rover will have a new electrical vehicle architecture, known internally as EVA 2.0, that will allow the business to interface wirelessly with more than 70 electronic components. This means that through a software update, Land Rover should be able to add new capabilities to the vehicle’s infotainment system, such as a new app, or improve existing functionalities. That’s a crucial component for any automaker seeking to stay relevant in today’s tech-driven world.

The integrated voice assistant in the 2022 Range Rover will be Amazon Alexa, which can deliver news updates, check the driver’s calendar, operate some car operations, turn on lights at home, and link with other Alexa-enabled devices.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the in-car platforms that bring a smartphone’s look and functionalities to the vehicle’s primary screen, will also be available.
