J R Smith, the former NBA Sixth Man of the Year, has begun his journey into the world of collegiate sports. Smith made his first appearance for the North Carolina A&T men’s golf team on Monday. However, the first half of his undergraduate athletic career was not as fruitful as he had imagined.
J.R. Smith shot a 10-over-par 81 in Round 1 of the Elon Phoenix Invitational Tournament in Burlington, N.C. Smith had a successful professional basketball career, winning two NBA titles in 16 years, so stepping down to the collegiate level and starting over in a completely new sport must be difficult for him.
In case you’re wondering, this does not appear to be a publicity stunt in the least. Smith is out there attempting to make a name for himself as a golfer. J.R. qualified for the event on Monday just like any other participant, missing the cut by one stroke.
